Summer has definitely arrived in Arizona and it is just a matter of time before even the pool in our back yard is too warm to comfortable to swim in.

Exquisite Log Cabin

I like to think that in the rest of the country, quilting is a fall and winter past time. Something to do when it is cold and snowing sideways outside.  We are a little reversed here in Phoenix. Winter is the time for hiking, golf, and other outdoor activities. Now, with the oppressive heat setting in…it is time to pour a cold drink and settle down with some enriching quilt projects.

Class Descriptions:

Maya’s Flowers: This charming little quilt is perfect for trying out new and adventurous fabric combinations. The model quilt utilizes both wool and quilting cottons in fused raw edge applique.

Participants will learn tips and techniques to get a high-quality applique stitch as we will discuss thread choices, stabilizers, fusible, stitch type and size, and how to use correct tension on your machine for optimal results. The pattern comes with downloadable .SVG files for use with electronic cutting machines. Participants who have an electronic cutting machine are encouraged to bring it to class and we will cover basic technique for using it successfully.Additional techniques discussed in the workshop includes how to weave the basket in the center medallion and how to successfully piece together the quilt top after completion, including the mitered corners in the appliqued border.

Angels: Basic to Intermediate hand applique (participants should be comfortable with hand sewing. Some previous experiences with applique is a plus)

Spend a cozy day in this workshop working on a block of your choice from the Angels quilt pattern. In this workshop you choose which is your favorite block to start on. We demonstrate and discuss fabric choices to create the expression that you want in your quilt.

We will cover two basic methods of hand applique: classical needle-turn applique and more contemporary methods that utilize fusible applique sheets and a glue stick. We also discuss thread choices, needle choices, thimble use, marking tools and other small details that are essential in order to have a positive applique experience.

Pick one block or make the entire quilt of Angels.

The participants will make a small sample with stitches used for hand-embellishing their block. It time allows they will start to embellish the block that they have been working on in class.

English Paper Piecing: In this fun 3-hour class you will learn all of Felicia’s tips in basting and piecing your hexagons, as well as tips and considerations for finishing your project. English Paper Piecing is a very old technique and allows you to not only piece quilting cottons, but also other, less stable, materials. It is also the perfect travel project for long car rides, kids soccer practices, and evenings in front of the TV. This class is great for all skill levels.

The Quiltmaker’s Butterfly Forest: Decide if you would like to just dip your toes in raw-edge appliqué or dive all the way in with this fun class based on Felicia’s new book The Quiltmaker’s Butterfly Forest (C&T Publishing 2017).

Workshop participants can choose to start any of the projects in the book from the Eclectic Butterfly placemats to the 12 wreath Tiputini. Under Felicia’s guidance you will learn the technical ins and outs of doing beautiful raw edge appliqué, and get inpiration and ideas on how to make your butterfly project truly sing with color and vibrance.

Lone Star Quilt: Have you ever admired the classical lone star quilts and thought they were too complicated to make with all their biases, machine corners and inset seams? Fear no more! Felicia will teach you the steps and techniques to make this classic a comfortable part of your repertoire. You will also learn the simple math of adjusting the size of your stars. Appropriate for anybody who have mastered ¼” seam allowances and basic pressing skills.

All The Pretty Colors: Beginners with some experience and beyondIn this class we will get a solid start on completing the quilt top for All The Pretty Colors (colored pencil quilt). The class is appropriate for those who have some basic quilting experience and have mastered basic cutting, piecing, and pressing.For the newbies we will spend some time covering the basics of foundation paper piecing and we will learn to chain piece our quilts in order to save time.

The pattern calls for Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids, but any brand with a good assortment of solids will work great – or use print fabric for a completely different feel.

Exquisite Log Cabin:  How do you make perfect blocks with narrow 1/4-inch logs without worrying about distortion and accurate seam allowances?

Learn how to make exquisite log cabin blocks with Felicia’s Paper Piecing Templates. This is a perfect class for those new to paper piecing but it is also a great way for those with some paper-piecing background have an enriching day making 4” or 7” log cabin blocks…maybe while busting through their scrap pile?

The workshop focuses on techniques for foundation paper piecing. As usual, Felicia also be discussing and working with participants on fabric selection and lay-out options for their projects.

My Cozy Village Machine Appliqué: In this full-day class you join quilt book author and designer Felicia Brenoe for a fun and educational day of constructing a cozy village. You will work on your favorite blocks from Felicia’s pattern My Cozy Village (C&T publishing) that can be finished as a 9-block quilt, a 4-block quilt, or a 1-block pillow or wall-hanging.

We will discuss color and fabric choices to express the mood we wish to create in our cozy villages.  Felicia will then share all her tricks for creating excellent raw-edge appliqué results. including setting the optimal tension on your machine, thread choices, use of fusible and stabilizers, block construction, and sewing techniques.

Felicia will work with students individually throughout the day and help you develop your skills in all aspects of the appliqué and design process. This class is sure to increase your confidence level and enjoyment of the appliqué process.
