The Man Quilt

by | Jun 30, 2016

Last week I completed a commission that have taken me much longer than I thought it would.  The quilt is for a rather stylish male couple and it was a really fun process to make a quilt to fit their apartment and lifestyle.

Trini and Fransisco’s condo is all about clean surfaces. It is modern, with basically no clutter anywhere. Their carefully curated furniture includes some rather famous pieces from Knoll. It is miles from my favorite “eclectic-bohemian-cottage-French Country went to Istanbul” style. manquilt2

The challenge was to make the couple a great quilt for their HUGE California king bed that was both decidedly masculine and minimalistic while still retaining my propensity for scrappiness and disdain for over-coordination of colors.

To accomplish this I dug into my pile of vintage and reproduction Japanese indigo fabrics, added some of the grey and blue fabrics from the Imprint collection by Katarina Rocella, some Orange, Gray, and Teal fabrics from Anna Maria Horner’s Loominous, and of course …. a bit of tartan plaid (my go-to for a bit of funkiness these days).

I foundation pieced the triangles. The large triangles are 3″ wide, while the smaller ones are 1 1/2″ wide.

The background is Clay from Michael Miller Cotton Couture.

I kept the quilting simple, just vertical lines at variable intervals. This was partly because I wanted to keep the quilt soft and draped, and partly because I wanted the structure of the straight lines.
